Stumphouse Middle Tunnel
Photo Suggestions
Just before you get to the Middle
Tunnel, there is a fork on the trail, take the left fork. The
tunnel is just a couple hundreds away.
Once you get to the base,
consider taking a photo of the trail leading (steep) up to the
tunnel
Hike up to the Tunnel opening and
shoot the entrance
If you are game, you can go into
the tunnel. Not too far in, there are bars to prevent people
from going any further.
Honestly, if you are into hiking,
it is a good hike. However, it is limited on what you can
photograph.
In the spring, there are wild flowers, Mt. Laurel
that can be photographed as you walk the trail.
There is a third Tunnel called
Sattler that is approx. 2 miles past the Middle Tunnel
Be sure to pull the article from
the
website on details of all the Tunnels.

While in the park, consider
photographing Issaqueena Falls
and/or The
Main Stumphouse Tunnel |
Driving and other Tips
From Walhalla, drive west on SC
28 for 6.9 miles. Turn right at the sign for Stumphouse Tunnel Park.
As you enter the park, turn right
into the parking lot like you are going to Issaqueena Falls
From the parking lot for
Issaqueena Falls, take the left trail and follow the yellow blazes
(hard to see, need to re-painted).
Follow the trail for 3/4 mile.
The first hundred yards, the trail is steep but once at the top it
is a fairly easy walk until you get to the tunnel.
As you are walking, be aware
there is Poison Ivey everywhere
(do not fall down off the trail).
The Park is open daily from 10am
to sunset (DST) except Christmas Day and inclement weather. There is
a $5 parking fee and a fee to reserve the large picnic shelter
Bathroom facilities available
close to the Main Tunnel |
