         History

Written records for the church date from 1875, but from information observed on gravestones, the church was in existence at least as early as 1850 as a missionary Church.  Oral traditions go back even further and tell of Saluda Hill beginning as a Methodist church begun by John Douthit, a (sometimes) Methodist preacher who moved to the area from Winston-Salem, NC.

Records also exist from the diaries of Bishop Asbury, a well-know Methodist circuit riding preacher, who wrote of visiting John “Ancient Father” Douthit and worshiping with him at the church.

The earliest marked grave in Saluda Hill Cemetery is that of Alfred Cassell, Born 1859 – Died 1864.  The older section of the cemetery is also the final resting place of several documented Civil War Veterans, including John Calhoun Masters.

The original building is said to have been a log structure that stood at the base of the hill, near the present Fellowship Hall.  On August 11, 1894, the church voted to erect a new building, located about halfway up the southwestern hill.  Much remodeling and many repairs were made on this building over the next 79 years.  On February 4, 1973, it was decided that no additional repairs would be done on the existing building and plans would be made for a new building.

Under the direction of V.T. Hardin, Jr. and with the help of many church and community members, the new church was completed and the first service was held in the new building on September of 1976.  Through the help of volunteer labor and financial and material contributions from the community, there were no outstanding debts on the church upon completion of the new building.

The first baptismal service was held in the new church on October 10, 1976.  Prior to the completion of the current building, candidates were baptized in the nearby Saluda River.
