Photo Suggestions
The first falls you will come to is Licklog Falls,
easy place to photo the entire falls. I recommend a wide
angle lens to get both the cascades at the bottom. |
|
The second falls, Licklog, it about 0.2 miles
further down the trail. The falls are best photographed from
the trail. Walk along until you see an opening in the trees to
photograph |
|
There is a trail to the base of the
of Licklog falls that is
quite difficult (about a 45 degree angle down) |
|
Continue hiking to the Chattooga River about another
0.2 mile - You come to a well defined campsite - Photograph the river |
Driving Tips and Other Information
- From Walhalla, drive NORTHWEST on SC 28 for
8.4 miles and bear RIGHT (north) onto SC 107. - Drive 3.1 miles and turn LEFT (west) onto Village Creek Road, just past the entrance to Oconee State Park. - Drive 1.7 miles and turn RIGHT onto Nicholson Ford Road (FS 775, gravel road). - Drive 2.2 miles to a parking area on the RIGHT. - PARK and access the Foothills Trail at the NORTHWEST corner of the lot. - Hike west on the Foothills Trail (white blaze) for .5 mile and turn LEFT onto the Chattooga Trail. - Hike 0.2 mile to Pigpen Falls. - Cross the footbridge continue for another 0.2 mile on the Chattooga Trail and the first level of Licklog Falls will be to the right of the trail. - The second level is approximately 50 yards downstream of the first. - Continue hiking to you come to the Chattooga River |
|
When you turn onto Nicholson Ford road, it will look
like a driveway, but keep driving until you get to the parking area - You will ford two streams (not deep for any type of vehicle) - Folks if you saw the movie Deliverance, this is way past any point in that movie - If you want to get away from it all, this is the place to be - NO cell service |
|
Less than a mile hike down the Chattooga Trail
offers two waterfalls: the two-tiered, 80-foot Licklog Falls and the
25-foot stack of Pigpen Falls. Licklog Creek tumbles into Pigpen as
two long, divided veils which empty into a sandy pool. - Pigpen Falls is the first falls you will come to - Licklog Falls is the second falls you will see
Farther down the trail
is the first section of Licklog, a two-tiered 30-foot high falls
with a sandy bottomed swimming hole. Another 50 yards down the trail
is the second section, a 50-foot tier that dumps directly into the
Chattooga River. |
|
I have no idea where the powers to be came up with the names, Pigpen and Licklog falls |
